Engines quote passages, not pages
When an assistant answers, it does not copy your page: it lifts a fragment of a few sentences. That fragment has to stand up outside its context, otherwise it is unusable and the engine will restate a competitor idea instead, with no attribution to you.
That is why excellent pages go uncited. The problem is almost never the substance, it is the shape that blocks extraction: sections opening on a linking sentence, paragraphs that run too long, no figure worth reproducing.
What the eight signals measure
Four signals cover structure: a single H1, H2 sections, lists and tables, short paragraphs. Three cover content: the answer sitting at the top of each section, the density of verifiable facts, the volume. The last checks for a question and answer block.
The weighting is not uniform. The answer-first signal is worth twenty-five points on its own, because it is the most frequent and most costly defect. Evidence density is worth fifteen. The rest share what remains.

Why this matters for GEO
Citability is fixable, authority is built: It is the fastest lever on the list: rewriting a section opener takes ten minutes.
The defect is invisible to the author: A page that reads well top to bottom can offer no self-contained passage. Only a measurement reveals it.
Figures are what gets quoted: A precise claim is reproduced and attributed. A vague one is absorbed and credited to nobody.
A good score isolates the real problem: A well-structured page that is still uncited has an authority problem, not a content one. That is a useful diagnosis.

Citability is the property of a passage that can be lifted out of your page and dropped into an answer without breaking. An engine generating an answer does not quote pages, it quotes fragments. If a fragment only makes sense in the context of the three paragraphs above it, it cannot travel, and the engine will paraphrase a competitor instead. That is why citability is not the same thing as quality. A brilliant essay written as a continuous argument can be almost impossible to quote, while a plainer page organised into self-contained sections gets cited repeatedly. The tool measures the structural properties that let a fragment stand alone, not whether the writing is good.
